Evelyn "Champagne" King

In 1960, Evelyn "Champagne" King was born in the Bronx, New York but raised in Philly, PA. King worked as a janitor in a hotel in Philly to make ends meet. While working and scrubbing a bathroom late one night while singing at the top of her lungs, she was discovered by producer T. Life of Philadelphia International Records. As a guest of the hotel, T. Life happened by chance to overhear King's melodious voice.

Before Evelyn "Champagne" King was Evelyn "Champagne" King, she went by the name Evelyn "Bubbles" King; her mom gave her the nickname "Bubbles." Producer T. Life advised King to change her nickname from "Bubbles" to "Champagne," stating that a childish nickname like "Bubbles" would be unfitting for a soul singer.
